Jean-Gabriel Chelala Circles the Globe by Peddling

Jean-Gabriel Chelala is on a journey around the globe by bicycle and cyclomer (human powered boat). His mission is to make the first human powered circumnavigation of the world.

TowBoatU.S. Ft Lauderdale's captains first spotted Jean-Gabriel when they noticed his unusual vessel making its way through Port Everglades and they subsequently got a chance to speak with the captain of this eco-friendly vessel when it moored up to Lauderdale Marina's face dock.

When asked why he was making this journey, Jean-Gabriel said that he wanted to show what man is capable of and that we truly can change our impact on the Earth. "The human body is full of renewable energy. Nothing is impossible; everybody can achieve great things," says Jean-Gabriel. Jean-Gabriel left Paris at 10 A.M. on January 13th 2008, bound for Portugal by bicycle. Once he arrived in Portugal, he lost 5 weeks because of weather before he could start the next leg of his trip by boat.

The boat that he is using for the water portions of the trip is a mere 24' 6" in length and 5' 2" wide, just enough for one person to sit down. It is powered solely by Jean-Gabriel peddling the bicycle like parts. It is similar to a peddle boat one would find for tourists on a calm lake without the luxury of a second person to help peddle. The vessel is scantily equipped with a water maker and a Coleman Stove. The Electronics package is comprised of a GPS and a VHF radio.

On the journey across the North Atlantic Jean-Gabriel endured extreme temperatures, rough seas, and mechanical and electrical failures. He pulled into Port Everglades in the early hours of August 12th 2008 after a few stops in the islands for rest and repairs. Now Jean-Gabriel faces another challenge. He is only half way around the world and he is in dire financial straights. Although he is out of money, Jean-Gabriel plans on continuing the mission. "I am currently looking for sponsors to go on to Alaska, but if I do not find any soon I will go and see what happens on the way." says Jean-Gabriel.
