The Next Generation is in Training!
High School Students Alex Cox and Ricky Pabon spent several days in August underway on a variety of boats owned and operated by TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale. During their time on the water they experienced a variety of different operations that make up a typical day in the life of a towing and salvage Captain. Working under close supervision from the company’s supervisory staff and licensed captains, they had the opportunity to experience towing operations, both offshore and in close quarters in and around the local marinas. They also had the opportunity to assist in the company’s commercial division by deploying containment boom around a ship in Port Everglades and assisting the deckhand while performing a passenger launch to a ship in the local anchorage. Later in the week, they experienced their first dockside salvage as well as a boat fire case!
Cox commented on the highlights of his first few days of familiarization “The friendly crew made me feel right at home! It was eye opening to see the variety of work that the captains do in a typical day. Thank you for giving me this opportunity!”
“We are excited about introducing the next generation of towing and salvage captains to the business first hand” stated President Larry Acheson. “It is an exciting business that helps hone a young captains boat handling, customer service and problem solving skills in an atmosphere that helps build a great deal of self-confidence. These kids have been on both inboard and outboard boats ranging in size from 27 feet to 46 feet during their time here. The experience that they are getting at a young age is priceless!”
