Larry Acheson founded Offshore Marine Towing in 1989 after several years of towing and salvage experience gained on the west coast of Florida. The initial operation was based in Oakland Park, FL with a single 24'' Privateer providing towing services to the North Broward County marine community. Offshore Marine Towing joined the BoatU.S. (Boat Owners Association of The United States) towing program in 1989 and became one of the first TowBoatU.S. companies in South Florida. The company now operates its towing and salvage operation under the name of TowBoatU.S. Ft. Lauderdale.
Under Capt. Acheson''''s direction, Offshore Marine Towing grew to include two bases of operation, one near the Hillsboro Inlet and the other near the Port Everglades Inlet. The company expanded to thirteen vessels ranging in size from 24'' rigid hulled inflatables to 31'' JC custom hulls to 96'' steel-hulled salvage vessel allowing for prompt and professional service to a customer base that spans South Florida from Delray Beach south to Miami, and east into the Bahamas, as well as other long distance ventures.
Capt. Acheson enjoys the study of his trade and has a collection of remarkable salvage and towing reference volumes. His expertise in salvage enables the company to provide a damage free recovery of vessels of virtually any size. He has successfully completed thousands of salvage operations, including yacht salvage in foreign waters as well as in U.S. waters, developed and maintains a working relationship with major ship salvors, LLC, provided training for the salvage crew, and assembled an extensive inventory of salvage equipment.
Being an avid boater himself, Capt.Acheson cruised the Great Lakes as a child, and worked and traveled throughout the Gulf. Extended voyages include traveling the Eastern U.S. from Florida to Maine, crossing to Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and the French Islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon. He has extensive experience in Bahamian waters and has completed recent journeys to Bermuda.
Capt. Acheson is an active supporter and leader of the boating community. In addition to its search and rescue efforts in supporting local law enforcement and U.S. Coast Guard, Offshore Marine Towing’s professional associations include: TowBoatU.S. (Boat Owners Association of The United States approved towing network), Regional representative on the BoatU.S. Towing Company Advisory Council, C-PORT (The National Association for the Marine Assistance Industry), Member of C-PORT’s Board of Directors, Ft. Lauderdale Mariners Club, MIASF (Marine Industries Association of South Florida) and the Port Everglades Propeller Club.
